The demand for sustainability has grown rapidly, which calls upon more advanced geospatial information theories and technologies to cope with the pressing environmental problems, especially in face of climate change. Spatio-temporal intelligence, the fusion of analytical GIS, computational intelligence, and predictive analytics, is a new research frontier that aims to meet this goal. By bringing together spatial and temporal context to amplify the value of spatial analytics, spatio-temporal intelligence seeks to understand why spatial changes have happened in the past, to predict what and where changes will happen in the future, and to plan the changes towards sustainability. Prof. Huang, Bo’s research group is leading the development of this research field with focus on three interrelated areas, i.e., spatio-temporal image fusion, change analysis, and spatial optimization. Spatio-temporal image fusion aims to blend images with high and low spatio-temporal resolutions to generate dense time-series high-spatial-resolution images in support of continuous monitoring of the environment, including air, water, and land surface change. The changes thus captured can then be analyzed using spatial statistics to identify the factors driving the dynamic processes of change and to explore their relative importance, and to simulate “what-if” decision making under alternative change scenarios. While change analysis is based on a historical development trend, multi-objective spatial optimization intends to channel the changes to right zones given the limited resources and spatial constraints in light of sustainability principles. Tying together different methods and the cutting-edge technologies, spatio-temporal intelligence offers valuable and powerful tools for monitoring and modeling change dynamics and hence holds much promise for applications in sustainable land, transportation, and urban planning.

报告人简介:
Dr. Bo Huang is a Professor and Director of MSc Program in GeoInformation Science with the Department of Geography and Resource Management, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he is also the Associate Director of the Institute of Space and Earth Information Science. Prior to this, he worked at University of Calgary, Canada and National University of Singapore. His research interests are broad, covering most aspects of Geographical Information Science (GIScience), specifically: spatial/spatio-temporal statistics for land cover/land use change modeling, image fusion for environmental monitoring, spatial optimization for sustainable urban and land use planning, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and web/wireless GIS for location-based service. He has published extensively in the field of GIScience, including over 90 refereed journal articles and 60 conference proceedings. Dr. Huang serves as Executive Editor of Annals of GIS and on the editorial boards of several international journals, including International Journal of Geographical Information Science (Taylor & Francis). He is currently exploring along the line of spatio-temporal Intelligence, convinced that this new paradigm will revolutionize the way how geographical information is analyzed and utilized in the future.
