2017年10月22日上午10:00，芬兰赫尔辛基大学Petri Pellikka教授应邀来我所做题为：Remote sensing of the impacts of land cover change to ecosystem services in Africa的学术报告。
报告的主要内容是：Land cover change in Africa is caused mainly by agricultural expansion as more land is cleared for food production and food security. Decrease of forests and natural vegetation has a lot of harmful consequences, such as loss of biodiversity and habitats for pollinators, for example, decreased water harvesting and storage capabilities by forests, enhanced soil erosion risk and changes in radiation balance. In the end the consequences affect local climate, regional climate and climate in general. The consequences of land change globally are not only restricted to Africa, but it is still the only continent where increase of agricultural requires more cropland to be cleared.
The case study area of the lecture is Taita Hills in Kenya, which has been studied intensively by the University of Helsinki since 2003. The research started in developing land cover change detection methodology by remote sensing and GIS, but has recently been concentrating in investigation of the consequences and adaptation strategies on climate change. Together with remote sensing data including historical aerial and satellite imagery, laser scanning and hyperspectral data, and other geospatial datasets such as DEMs we have investigated the ability of montane forest to retrieve fog deposit and store water resources, assessed the carbon stocks in various land cover and land use types, and measured gas emissions and soil respiration from various land uses and termite mounds. The results can be generalized as the phenomena is taking place also in other parts of sub-Saharan Africa. With all the previous studies, more than 60 MSc and 10 PhD theses, and outcomes, we are developing a climate smart landscape model.
The lecture series combine all this from remote sensing data acquisition and processing to land cover change results and how remote sensing data is employed to Earth System Science application, and finally to develop adaptation strategies and climate smart landscape.
Petri Pellikka教授目前主要应用遥感等多源数据研究非洲地区因农业发展、保护区设定等引起的土地利用变化对水，碳储存、生物多样性，地方气候的影响。Petri Pellikka 教授目前是《Sensors》, 《International Journal of Applied Geospatial Research》, 《International Journal of Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation》 等期刊的编辑，是国际遥感环境领域极具影响力的学者之一。
